What Is AI SEO?
AI SEO is the practice of making a business easier for AI search experiences, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search and Microsoft Copilot, to find, understand and cite, alongside ranking in traditional search results.

How it works
How it works in practice
Step 1: Crawl access
Search and AI search crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot can reach every public page, which is indexed in Google and Bing.
Step 2: Clear entity information
The business name, services, founder, address and profiles are stated consistently on the site and in structured data.
Step 3: Direct answers
Pages answer real buyer questions in their first sentences, then give the detail.
Step 4: Evidence
Claims are supported by first-party proof such as published case studies.
Step 5: Corroboration
Independent profiles, directories and reviews describe the business the same way.
Why it matters
Why it matters
AI answers name a small number of businesses. Being understood and trusted is now part of being found.
AI SEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it: most AI search experiences draw on the same search indexes.
Two meanings
AI SEO has two meanings
People use “AI SEO” for two different things. The first is the meaning on this page: optimising a website so AI search experiences, such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT Search and Microsoft Copilot, can find, understand and cite it. The second is using AI tools to do SEO work faster, such as keyword research, content outlines, technical audits and internal linking suggestions.
Both are legitimate and they work well together. Google's guidance says generative AI can help research a topic and structure original content, but that generating many pages without adding value for users can break its spam policy on scaled content abuse. AI tools speed up the work; people still decide what is true, useful and worth publishing.
| Factor | SEO for AI search | Using AI tools for SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Be found, understood and cited by AI search experiences | Do research, writing support and audits faster |
| Typical work | Crawl access, entity consistency, direct answers, evidence | Keyword clustering, outlines, first drafts, audit checks, schema drafts |
| Main risk | Blocking the crawlers AI search uses | Publishing unchecked or mass-produced pages |
| Where Madvert Labs fits | AI SEO and AEO services | Used inside the work, always reviewed by a person |

The common mistake
Blocking the crawlers AI search depends on, or writing content for machines instead of buyers. Hidden text and keyword stuffing do not help and can harm.
